crisis mapping and rapid assessment GIS

Crisis Mapping and Rapid Assessment with GIS 2026

Duration: 5 Days

Location: Nairobi

Course Overview

When a crisis hits, the first hours matter most. Decision-makers need accurate, location-based information fast. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) make that possible. This course trains you to deliver it.

You will work through the complete crisis mapping workflow, from collecting and validating data in the field, to spatial analysis, map production, and emergency reporting. You will use satellite imagery, open data platforms, and mobile tools to build situational awareness and support coordinated response in high-pressure environments.

Training covers the skills that matter most in real crisis contexts: speed, accuracy, and clear communication. You will learn to track displacement, assess infrastructure damage, map vulnerability hotspots, and build geospatial dashboards that keep response teams informed in real time. Every session uses practical exercises drawn from real humanitarian and disaster scenarios.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the role of GIS and crisis mapping in disaster and conflict response
  • Collect, clean, and analyze geospatial data quickly during emergencies
  • Use mobile tools for field-based assessments and map-based reporting
  • Produce crisis maps that support emergency decision-making and coordination
  • Conduct rapid damage and needs assessments using spatial analysis tools
  • Build dynamic GIS dashboards for real-time crisis monitoring

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for professionals who work in or support emergency response, humanitarian operations, and disaster risk management. It is a strong fit for:

  • Emergency response and disaster risk management professionals
  • GIS officers and spatial data analysts
  • Humanitarian program and operations staff
  • Urban planners and civil engineers working in crisis-prone areas
  • Government disaster response teams and civil protection units
  • Researchers and consultants in emergency mapping and disaster risk reduction

How the Training Works

This course is technical and hands-on from the start. You will work with the same tools used by GIS professionals in active crisis responses around the world.

  • Technical lectures grounded in real-world crisis mapping examples
  • Step-by-step practical exercises using QGIS, KoboToolbox, Google Earth, and ArcGIS Online
  • Live simulation of rapid assessment data collection and visualization
  • Case studies from conflict zones, post-disaster regions, and pandemic response operations
  • Group projects focused on building crisis maps and early warning tools

What You Will Walk Away With

This course builds practical GIS capacity for emergency contexts. After completing the training, you will be equipped to:

  • Deploy GIS tools rapidly at the onset of an emergency
  • Produce clear, actionable maps for field coordination and resource mobilization
  • Analyze displacement patterns, vulnerability, and infrastructure damage spatially
  • Support operational and policy decisions with real-time spatial data
  • Strengthen your organization’s preparedness and response capacity for future crises
