GIS Data Collection Tools (ODK, Survey123, Kobo Toolbox) Training Course
Duration: 5 Days
Location: Nairobi
Course Overview
Accurate, timely, and geo-referenced data is the foundation of effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation in development, humanitarian, environmental, and governance projects. With the widespread availability of mobile devices and internet connectivity, mobile-based GIS data collection tools—such as Open Data Kit (ODK), Survey123, and Kobo Toolbox—have revolutionized the way field data is collected, validated, and mapped in real time.
This practical course equips participants with the technical skills and strategic insights to design, deploy, and manage mobile GIS data collection workflows using ODK, Survey123, and Kobo Toolbox. Participants will learn how to design dynamic digital survey forms with skip logics, constraints, and calculations, integrate GPS and multimedia data (photos, audio, barcodes), and synchronize field data with GIS platforms for real-time mapping and analysis.
Special emphasis is placed on optimizing mobile surveys for data quality, field efficiency, offline use, and stakeholder reporting. The course also addresses data security, ethical data collection, device management, and integration with visualization tools like Power BI, QGIS, and ArcGIS Online.
