Course Overview
Traditional monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems often miss a key piece of the picture: location. Without a spatial view, it is hard to spot geographic gaps, target interventions well, or show stakeholders where impact is happening. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solve this problem.
This training teaches you to integrate geospatial data and tools into your M&E frameworks. You will learn to collect, map, analyze, and visualize spatial data tied to project indicators, outputs, and outcomes. The course covers the full M&E lifecycle, from baseline mapping and geotagged data collection to spatial performance tracking and impact assessment.
You will build practical skills in creating M&E maps, spatial dashboards, and stakeholder reports using both open-source and commercial GIS tools. Whether you manage a health program, an agricultural project, or a disaster resilience initiative, this course equips you to use GIS as a strategic M&E asset.
Course Objectives
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
- Explain the role and value of GIS in M&E systems
- Integrate spatial data and indicators into M&E frameworks and logframes
- Collect georeferenced data using mobile tools and link it to GIS platforms
- Analyze and visualize project data using maps, graphs, and dashboards
- Monitor spatial trends, service coverage, and beneficiary distribution
- Communicate M&E findings through clear geospatial outputs
This course complements results-based monitoring and evaluation frameworks, covered in depth in our advanced M&E training.
Who Should Attend
This training is built for professionals who track program performance and impact. It is a strong fit for:
- M&E professionals in NGOs, government, and development agencies
- Project and program managers
- Data analysts and GIS officers
- Researchers and evaluation consultants
- Field officers engaged in project implementation and tracking
How the Training Works
You will learn through hands-on exercises using QGIS, KoboToolbox, and GIS dashboards. Sessions use real-world datasets and project-based simulations so you can apply skills directly to your own work.
- Group work and peer-to-peer learning
- Interactive map-building and spatial storytelling exercises
- Performance tracking practice using live project data
- Expert-led tutorials and case studies from development programs
What You Will Walk Away With
You will leave this training with practical GIS-M&E skills you can apply right away. You will be able to:
- Apply GIS tools confidently in project monitoring and evaluation
- Develop spatially-informed M&E frameworks and indicators
- Map project outputs and visualize progress toward goals
- Identify spatial inequalities, service gaps, and impact zones
- Create visual reports and dashboards for stakeholder communication
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes GIS useful for monitoring and evaluation?
GIS adds a spatial dimension to traditional M&E data, so you can see exactly where program outputs and outcomes occur. This helps identify coverage gaps, target interventions more precisely, and communicate results to stakeholders through maps rather than tables alone.
Who should take a course on GIS for M&E?
M&E officers, project managers, data analysts, and GIS professionals working in development, health, or agriculture all gain direct value. Field officers who collect and track project data also benefit, since georeferenced data collection improves accuracy and speeds up reporting.
What tools are used to combine GIS with M&E work?
Participants work with QGIS, KoboToolbox, and ODK for georeferenced data collection, alongside GIS dashboards for visualization. These tools link spatial and non-spatial project indicators, allowing teams to map performance and track outcomes without needing advanced technical backgrounds.
How does spatial data improve project evaluation?
Spatial data reveals patterns that standard reports miss, such as which regions show strong outcomes and which lag behind. Before and after mapping, hotspot analysis, and beneficiary distribution maps let evaluators compare conditions and measure impact with more precision.
Can this training apply across different program sectors?
Yes. The skills apply directly to health, agriculture, education, and disaster resilience programs, since all of these rely on tracking indicators across geographic areas. Participants learn transferable GIS-M&E methods they can adapt to their specific sector and project needs.
