Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Strategies MSME Training Course
Duration: 5 Days
Location: Nairobi
Course Overview
Micro, small, and medium enterprises drive most of the economic activity across Africa. Small businesses represent around 90% of all businesses globally, and Sub-Saharan Africa alone is home to an estimated 44 million MSMEs. Yet most of them struggle to grow past a certain point.
The barriers are well documented. Access to finance remains the single biggest obstacle. Recent research found that nearly a third of MSMEs seeking loans were denied, and nearly two thirds reported that business conditions had worsened compared to the previous year. Markets are hard to reach. Policies meant to help small businesses often miss the mark entirely.
The professionals tasked with supporting these businesses need more than good intentions. They need practical skills, clear frameworks, and strategies that work on the ground. That is exactly what our MSME course is built to deliver.
What the MSME Course Is About
This course focuses on the full range of strategies used to develop and support micro, small, and medium enterprises. It covers policy design, financing, market access, institutional support, and business development services.
The content is built for people who work with MSMEs, not just those who own them. By the end of the five days, participants can identify key barriers to MSME growth, design targeted interventions, strengthen institutional frameworks, and connect small enterprises to finance, technology, and markets.
The course runs for five days and is available online or in-person in Nairobi.
Who Should Enroll?
This is not a course for entrepreneurs looking to start a business. It is designed for the people and institutions that create the conditions for MSMEs to grow.
The course is best suited for:
- Government policymakers and MSME development officers
- Development partners and donor agency staff
- NGO and civil society professionals supporting enterprise development
- Chamber of commerce and business association leaders
- Local government officials and planners
- Business incubator and accelerator program staff
No prior experience in MSME policy is required. The course builds from the basics and moves to hands-on application by the end.
What the Course Covers
Module 1: Understanding MSMEs and Their Economic Role
The course starts with the fundamentals. Participants learn the definitions and classifications of MSMEs, their contribution to employment and GDP, and the key trends affecting small businesses in developing economies.
Understanding the landscape is essential before designing any intervention. What works for a micro-enterprise in a rural area is very different from what suits a medium-sized manufacturer in a city. Getting this right from the start saves a lot of wasted effort downstream.
Module 2: Policy and Institutional Frameworks
Weak policy is one of the biggest obstacles MSMEs face. Excessive regulation, poor coordination between agencies, and unclear formalization pathways slow businesses down and push many into the informal sector.
This module covers national MSME policies and regulatory environments, inter-agency coordination, public-private partnerships, and strategies for improving the ease of doing business. Participants learn how to assess existing policy frameworks and identify where targeted changes would have the most impact.
Module 3: Access to Finance and Financial Inclusion
Most small businesses cite financing as their biggest challenge. While the share of MSMEs using bank loans has grown in recent years, a large portion are still denied credit. Collateral requirements, high interest rates, and limited financial literacy all play a role.
This module covers MSME financing instruments, credit guarantee schemes, microfinance, digital financial services, and enterprise risk management. Participants learn how different financing tools apply to different types of enterprises, and how to design programs that reduce barriers to credit access.
Module 4: Business Development Services and Capacity Building
Finance alone does not grow a business. MSMEs also need technical support, mentorship, and access to relevant training. This module covers enterprise support programs, incubators, technical assistance, and innovation and technology adoption strategies.
Participants learn to design support ecosystems, not just one-off programs. The goal is building institutional capacity that keeps delivering results long after a single intervention ends.
What an MSME Course Teaches About Market Access
A business that cannot reach buyers cannot grow. Market access is one of the most persistent barriers for small enterprises, especially those trying to move into regional or export markets.
This module covers market linkage strategies, value chain integration, and export readiness. Enterprises that use technology and trade frameworks to access regional markets tend to grow faster and are more stable than those relying only on local demand. Participants learn how to design programs that connect small businesses to buyers, value chains, and trade networks in practical, repeatable ways.
Why This Training Matters Now
The pressure on MSME support institutions is growing. Donors, governments, and boards are asking harder questions about program results and resource use. At the same time, the environment MSMEs operate in is becoming more demanding.
Development officers without the right frameworks end up designing programs that look good on paper but deliver little. Policymakers who do not understand MSME financing realities create regulations that push small businesses further into the informal sector. This MSME course closes that gap directly.
What Changes After the Course
Most participants return to work able to assess policy gaps in their context, identify the right support tools for different enterprise segments, and design more targeted programs. These are skills they can apply within days of completing the training.
At the institutional level, the impact shows up in better-coordinated support programs, more effective use of funds, and stronger working relationships between government agencies, development partners, and the private sector.
The frameworks taught in this course apply across different countries, sectors, and stages of enterprise development. They do not expire.
