Training Course on Youth Engagement in Governance and Civic Participation

Youth Engagement in Governance and Civic Participation Training Course

Duration: 5 Days

Location: Nairobi

Course Overview
Meaningful youth participation in governance and civic life is critical for building inclusive, accountable, and democratic societies. Despite their demographic strength, young people are often underrepresented in decision-making processes and face systemic barriers to civic engagement. This course is designed to empower institutions and youth-focused practitioners with the knowledge, tools, and strategies necessary to foster youth engagement in governance, policymaking, peacebuilding, and public accountability.
Participants will examine the legal, institutional, and social frameworks that enable or constrain youth participation in governance. The course explores global standards—such as the UN Youth Strategy and the African Youth Charter—and national strategies for integrating youth voices in political processes, civic platforms, and community leadership. It emphasizes participatory governance models, digital engagement, advocacy techniques, and mechanisms for institutionalizing youth inclusion in governance structures.
Practical sessions will equip participants with skills in mobilizing, organizing, and supporting youth for civic action—ranging from voting and volunteering to policy influence, watchdog roles, and leadership in public institutions. Special focus is placed on marginalized youth groups, gender inclusion, and leveraging technology to increase reach and impact.
